Apple quietly rolls out AirPods update

January 31, 2017

Apple is quietly rolling out a new AirPods firmware update with version number 3.5.1. The update is installed automatically when AirPods are in their charging case and connected to an iOS device.

It’s not yet clear what this update does because Apple is yet to provide AirPods users with any release notes. In fact, you probably won’t even notice it has been installed unless you check your AirPods’ firmware version number in the Settings app.

However, it’s thought the update could address some of the complaints raised by users over unreliable Bluetooth connectivity — particularly when connected to an iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus — and battery drain when the AirPods are stored in the charging case.

Teething troubles aside, AirPods have been incredibly well received by critics and early adopters since making their debut. They are praised not only for their sound quality, but also the new W1 chip, which makes pairing super-simple and provides better connectivity (most of the time).

You can check the firmware version of your AirPods by opening the Settings app, tapping General, then About, then AirPods. If you’re yet to receive version 3.5.1, ensure your AirPods are in the charging case and connected to an iOS device over Bluetooth.
